Jens Schubbe studied music and German language and literature in Greifswald. After two years as a teacher in Wismar, he was banned from working because he refused to do military service with weapons. He worked as a choir singer at the Theater Stralsund (1988 to 1992), then as a choir singer and dramaturge at the same theater (1992 to 1998), as a dramaturge at the Berlin Chamber Opera (1998 to 2001), and then as a dramaturge at the Konzerthaus Berlin (2001 to 2010). From 2010 to 2019, he was artistic director and managing director of the Collegium Novum Zurich; from 2018 to 2021, he was dramaturge at the Dresden Philharmonic and then artistic director of the œnm.œsterreichisches Ensemble für neue Musik (Austrian Ensemble for New Music). He has worked as a consultant for the Alte Oper Frankfurt (2012 to 2019) and for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna (since 2019) and writes as a freelance author for various institutions and clients.
