Anja-Christin Winkler studied music theatre directing in Hamburg and media directing at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. She has worked at various theatres, including the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Zentrum für Musiktheater Karlsruhe (ZMK), the Vienna State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Volksbühne Berlin, and the Opera Bonn.

Since 2003, she has been working as a freelance director, realizing numerous interdisciplinary music theatre projects. She serves as a lecturer at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig as well as at the Department of Theatre Studies at Leipzig University. From 2017 to 2022, she was also a member of the Leipzig Cultural Council.

Anja is a founding member of werkbühne leipzig e. V., where she was solely responsible for concept development and artistic direction of the projects until 2019. Since 2018, she has been collaborating with Ilka Seifert as a successful directing duo.

She is also a member of the speakers’ committee of the nationwide Netzwerk Freies Musiktheater and co-founded the initiative Freies Musiktheater Leipzig together with Jeffrey Döring, Elise Schobeß and Damian Ibn Salem.
